Oil pipelines

Joint sealing and corrosion protection for oil distribution and process pipelines

Stakes of failure

Corrosion protection on oil pipelines is a question of decades of service life: a buried joint must survive in the ground for as long as the pipeline does. Covalence heat‑shrink sleeves and Stopaq systems are tested for oil distribution, splash‑zone, and process‑piping conditions.

Questions and answers

What protects buried gas and oil pipes?
Buried steel lines and their joints are protected with Stopaq's cold-applied polyisobutene wrap, with a mechanical Stopaq Outerwrap on top. At road, rail and waterway crossings the casing annulus is filled with Stopaq Casing Filler.
Can Stopaq be applied without taking the pipe out of service?
Stopaq is applied cold and without blasting, so the pipe can often stay in service during the work. We assess the right procedure for the site, so do ask.
Does the protection interfere with cathodic protection?
No. Stopaq is compatible with cathodic protection, which matters on long buried transmission lines. The protection and the cathodic protection work together.
What temperature and load does the protection withstand?
Stopaq Wrappingband withstands −45 °C to +70 °C in service and +90 °C short-term. The mechanical Outerwrap protects the wrap from impact and indentation during and after backfilling.
Does the system also suit crossings and casings?
Yes. Stopaq Casing Filler fills the annulus between the casing and the carrier pipe at crossings, and the Stopaq wrap also protects fittings and penetrations. Tell us the type of site and we suggest the right combination.
