Questions and answers

Which system protects a district heating joint?
The joints of pre-insulated district heating pipes are sealed with Covalence heat-shrink sleeves or BG Industry heat-shrink joints. Both are tested to EN-489:2009 by the FFI. The choice depends on pipe size and contract requirements.
Why is sealing the joint critical?
The insulation of a district heating pipe stays dry only if the joint keeps water out. A leaking joint wets the insulation, weakens the thermal insulation and starts corrosion of the steel pipe under the casing. The repair means opening the street and interrupting heat distribution.
Which pipe sizes do the products fit?
Covalence DualSeal RJS-E covers casings from 90 to 1200 mm and BG Industry heat-shrink joints cover DN 90 to DN 450. Together they cover the typical size range of a district heating network.
Can the joint be made without welding?
Yes. The BG Industry heat-shrink joint is a non-welded, butyl-sealed, leak-testable joint. Covalence heat-shrink sleeves are installed by heating, not welding.
How long does the protection last?
The systems are designed to last in the ground for the service life of the pipe, where a traditional coating is recoated about every ten years. This reduces excavation and maintenance shutdowns over the network's lifecycle.
